Stay · SURí Refugios

Remember what it feels like to sleep inside nature.

Micro-refuges in places with no formal lodging, next to families who live there year-round. Snug inside, vast outside.

You sleep in the place, not across from it.

The barrier

You come all this way looking for nature, then sleep with your back to it.

At the far end of the Carretera Austral there are whole stretches with nowhere to sleep. Where there is something, it's often a room like any city room, with Patagonia on the other side of the window.

That's why we started SURí Refugios in 2023: the first network of sustainable micro-refuges in Patagonia. They're small, warm and placed where it's worth waking up. They go in without foundations and, if needed, come apart without leaving a trace.

8 sites
From Candelario Mancilla to Balmaceda, along the southern Carretera Austral.
24 refuges
The network has grown from 2 to 24 units since 2023. And it's still growing.
8 partner families
Every refuge sits next to a home that's lived in year-round.
What the night is like

Inside, a warm light. Outside, everything else.

You arrive as evening falls and there's nothing to do but look. Inside there's just what you need: a comfortable bed, staying dry and warm while it rains outside, and a big window onto the forest or the water.

  • Real darkness. With no lights around, you see the whole sky.
  • Silence, with sound. The river, wind in the lenga beech, the odd bird. Nothing else.
  • Someone to welcome you.A mate, an unhurried conversation and, in the morning, directions you won't find on any map.

That's what we call primitive luxury: not the rustic, but the essential, done well.

Where they are

Eight sites along the road, eight families.

The network runs from Candelario Mancilla, on the Chilean side of Lake O'Higgins, to Balmaceda. Each new site is chosen by a family, not a map: wherever someone welcomes us and wants to share their place, that's where we put a refuge.

How it's designed

A refuge that can also leave.

A trip has to be good for all three: the traveler, nature and the people who live here. That's how these refuges are built.

No foundations.

Circular design: they rest on the ground, are maintained with what's nearby and, if the place calls for it, come apart without leaving a trace.

Small on purpose.

Just enough to sleep well and wake up inside the landscape. Less intervention, less noise, less show.

The value stays here.

Each night is paid to the host family. The network exists because it works for them too.
